The Lion's Trail

PLOT

Eleanor Kramer lives a tightly regulated life as a children‘s book editor. She hardly ever leaves her home. Not only does she feel overwhelmed in the presence of people, she has a strong fear of physical contact. Eleanor does have a very close relationship to her brother Frederick, who works as a missionary in an orphanage in South Africa. But she has not seen him in years, since her fear of being on a plane with so many people makes a flight impossible.

When Eleanor learns her brother is dying, she overcomes her paranoia and makes the journey to South Africa, accompanied by Max Reimann, Frederick’s friend and colleague. The flight is sheer torture. Upon her arrival in South Africa, all of her worst fears become reality: the hygienic conditions are a disaster, the people are emotional and worst of all – they do not shy away from contact.

Frederick knows just how much courage it must have taken his sister to come. Reassured by her presence, he falls asleep never again to awake. While preparing the funeral, Eleanor meets a strange young boy, Jomo, who had been quite fond of Frederick. When he disappears one day, Eleanor and Max go searching for him. As she experiences the beauty and splendor of South Africa, including a magical encounter with a powerful lion, she finally discovers happiness, and the ability to love she had never thought possible.
